A quiet Phoenix neighborhood was shattered by gunfire before sunrise after a deadly home invasion claimed the life of a 51-year-old homeowner. The shooting occurred in the early morning hours near 36th Street and Thomas Road in the city’s Camelback East area, prompting a large police response and leaving investigators searching for the person responsible.

Authorities say the suspect forced their way into the residence before fatally shooting the victim and fleeing the scene. As homicide detectives continue processing evidence and interviewing witnesses, many questions remain unanswered, including the motive behind the attack and the identity of the suspect.

Deadly Shooting Reported Around 4 A.M.

Phoenix police responded at approximately 4 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting at a home near 36th Street and Sheridan Street, just south of Thomas Road.

When officers arrived, they found that an intruder had allegedly forced entry into the residence before opening fire on an adult man inside the home. Phoenix Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene but determined that the victim had already died from his injuries.

Victim Identified as Daniel Saiz

Investigators later identified the victim as 51-year-old Daniel Saiz.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, Saiz was inside his residence when the suspect entered the home and shot him. Despite emergency responders arriving quickly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have not released additional information about Saiz or whether he had any prior connection to the suspect.

Suspect Forced Entry Before Opening Fire

Initial findings indicate that the incident was not an accidental shooting but a violent home invasion.

Police believe the suspect forcibly entered the residence before confronting Saiz inside. During that confrontation, the victim was shot. The suspect or suspects then fled before officers arrived, leaving investigators to reconstruct the events leading up to the killing.

Authorities have not disclosed how entry was gained, whether anything was stolen, or whether the attack appeared to be targeted. Detectives are continuing to examine physical evidence collected from the residence.

Large Police Presence Closes Streets

The homicide investigation led to a significant police presence throughout the neighborhood.

Investigators blocked portions of 36th Street while detectives processed the crime scene and documented evidence. Crime scene personnel spent hours examining the residence as officers canvassed nearby homes in hopes of locating surveillance footage or witnesses who may have seen suspicious activity before or after the shooting.

Residents gathered outside as investigators worked throughout the morning.

Neighbors React to the Violence

The deadly shooting shocked residents and business owners in the normally quiet neighborhood.

A nearby business owner, Troy Williams, expressed concern that violent crimes such as home invasions can occur anywhere, saying incidents like this serve as a reminder that no community is completely immune from crime.

Another resident, Tito Nunez, said the homicide made him reconsider his own home security and planned to become more vigilant about locking his doors.

One woman who lives nearby, but did not wish to be identified publicly, said her landlord had recently warned tenants through email about an increase in break-ins in the surrounding area during the previous several weeks. While police have not confirmed any connection between those reports and this homicide, the comments highlight growing concerns among residents about neighborhood safety.

Detectives Continue Active Investigation

Phoenix Police Department homicide detectives have taken over the investigation and continue working to determine exactly what occurred inside the home.

Investigators are reviewing evidence, interviewing potential witnesses, and examining whether surveillance cameras in the area captured the suspect’s movements. At this stage, authorities have not announced any arrests, released a suspect description, or identified a possible motive.

Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as new evidence becomes available.

Police Ask the Public for Help

Investigators are encouraging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity near 36th Street and Thomas Road around the time of the shooting to come forward.

Phoenix police are also asking residents with home security or surveillance footage from the early morning hours to review their recordings for anything unusual that could assist detectives.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Silent Witness, where tips can be provided anonymously. Authorities believe even seemingly minor details could help identify the individual responsible for the fatal shooting.

Community Awaits Answers

The homicide has left neighbors searching for answers following the violent pre-dawn attack.

As investigators continue gathering evidence and pursuing leads, residents remain hopeful that the person responsible will be identified and brought to justice. For now, the death of Daniel Saiz stands as another reminder of the devastating impact that violent home invasions can have on families and communities.

Police have not indicated whether they believe there is any ongoing threat to the public, but they continue urging anyone with information to assist the investigation as detectives work to solve the case.
