We’ve come a long way since leather helmets, haven’t we? Football helmets have always been a source of discussion, primarily for the use of safety. Well, what if I told you that you could take it a step further and use them for keeping cool in the hot summer sun? That is precisely what LSU football has decided to do as they’ve teamed up with Louisiana-based company Tigeraire to create the first football team with air-conditioned helmets.

LSU football will be the first college football team to implement air-conditioned helmets

This week, videos were released of LSU football players trying on air-conditioned helmets for the first time. The helmets come from a Louisiana-based company, Tigeraire, which has designed helmets to keep players cool.

As if that weren’t enough, the helmets provide an additional service to players who rock a visor. They have defogging technology to keep vision clear, even in heavy humidity.

A helmet such as this is especially important down in Louisiana. During summer training and the early season games, temperatures consistently sit around 80-90 degrees. Throw in humidity, and things can get difficult while running around with heavy pads on.

If LSU football elects to use these helmets for the upcoming 2023 season, it could give them a massive advantage. The farthest north the Tigers are scheduled to travel is Missouri for their week six matchup in early October.

If this kind of helmet does turn out to be an advantage for the Tigers, look out. They’re already in the College Football Playoff hunt, and this could easily be the edge that gets them there.

What did the players think of their new helmets?

Big shocker here, but the team seemed to love them. Many appeared surprised as they put the helmets on, immediately expressing excitement about what it could mean for their season.

In videos released by Tigeraire on various social media platforms, the players had some fantastic reactions to their new helmets.

Defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo described the helmets as feeling “hella good,” while several other players shared the sentiment. However, none had a better reaction than freshman tight end Mac Markway.

“If I’m runnin’ in this, I ain’t sweating,” Markway said. “At all. At all. It’s like, cold.”

Naturally, he passed the helmet along to his teammates so they could also try it out. Needless to say, the team is ready to look good and, more importantly, feel good this upcoming season. We’ll have to wait and see if it ultimately impacts how they play in 2023.
