A Pennsylvania woman and her boyfriend have been arrested after authorities accused them of severely abusing and neglecting a 20-year-old woman with Down syndrome who was under their care. Investigators allege the victim was physically assaulted, denied adequate food, and left outside for hours in cold, rainy weather. The disturbing case has sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the treatment of vulnerable adults.

Caregivers Arrested Following Investigation

According to court records and prosecutors, 31-year-old Yahnae Clegg-Brown and 35-year-old Naiyr “Hasan” Sanders were arrested in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on July 7. Both face charges related to the neglect and abuse of a care-dependent person. Sanders also faces additional charges, including simple assault.

Authorities say the victim, a 20-year-old woman with Down syndrome, was living under the care of her aunt, Clegg-Brown, and Sanders when the alleged abuse occurred.

Emergency Call Led to Discovery

The investigation reportedly began on April 25 after emergency responders received reports of someone crying outside a residence for an extended period. When officers arrived, weather conditions were cold and rainy, with temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Police initially believed the person outside was a child. However, they soon discovered it was a 20-year-old woman with Down syndrome who appeared distressed and physically injured. She was reportedly found behind the home soaked from the rain and carrying a trash bag filled with clothing.

Signs of Abuse and Malnutrition

Investigators say the woman showed multiple signs of physical abuse and neglect. Authorities reported injuries around her right eye, marks on various parts of her body, and indications of severe malnourishment. Emergency medical personnel responded after she informed officers that she had been hurt.

Prosecutors allege that the victim was systematically deprived of food while living in the home. According to reports, she suffered significant weight loss during her time in the caregivers’ custody. Authorities stated that she weighed approximately 82 pounds after losing nearly 50 pounds. The woman also reportedly has diabetes, making proper nutrition and medical care especially important.

Allegations of Physical Assault

The abuse allegations go beyond neglect. Prosecutors claim investigators recovered video evidence showing Sanders physically attacking the victim.

According to authorities, one video allegedly shows Sanders pushing the woman down concrete stairs before closing the door on her. Another video reportedly captures him striking her in the face. These recordings became a critical part of the criminal investigation.

If proven in court, the footage could play a significant role in the prosecution’s case.

Living Conditions Described as Inhumane

Authorities also described troubling living conditions inside the residence. Investigators allege the woman was forced to stay in a room containing bunk beds and a deteriorating mattress.

The room reportedly lacked basic necessities such as sheets, pillows, and blankets. Prosecutors argue these conditions demonstrate a pattern of neglect toward a vulnerable individual who depended on her caregivers for daily support and protection.

Victim Moved to Safe Location

Following her rescue, the woman was transported to a hospital for treatment and evaluation. Officials say she is now recovering in a safe environment away from the accused caregivers.

Authorities have not released further details about her medical condition, but reports indicate she is receiving the care and support she needs after months of alleged abuse.

Court Proceedings Underway

Court records show both suspects remain in custody after being unable to post bail. Bail was reportedly set at 10% of $250,000 for each defendant.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for July 16, where prosecutors are expected to present evidence supporting the charges. The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Growing Concern Over Abuse of Vulnerable Adults

The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by adults with disabilities who depend on caregivers for housing, food, medical care, and daily assistance. Advocacy groups have long warned that abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults often go undetected, particularly when victims have limited ability to report mistreatment.

Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains ongoing as they continue to review evidence and gather information related to the allegations.

Conclusion

The Pennsylvania case has shocked many due to the serious allegations involving a young woman with Down syndrome who was entrusted to the care of family members. Prosecutors claim she endured physical abuse, extreme neglect, malnutrition, and exposure to harsh weather conditions before authorities intervened. As the legal process moves forward, the case is expected to remain under close public scrutiny while the victim continues her recovery.
