‘Pet me’: 75-year-old man tries to make himself the center of attention at pet store, pepper sprays family who ignored him, cops say

What was supposed to be a routine weekend family outing to a local pet store transformed into a scene of pure chaos when an elderly man allegedly attacked a family with pepper spray. According to police reports, the conflict erupted over a highly unusual demand for attention.

The incident unfolded mid-afternoon on Saturday at a bustling local pet supply center. Witnesses say the store was crowded with families, regular shoppers, and plenty of actual pets. Amidst the rows of chew toys and aquarium tanks, a 75-year-old man, later identified by authorities as Arthur Miller, began drawing attention to himself. Rather than browsing the aisles or looking at the animals, Miller reportedly started wandering the store while loudly exclaiming, “Pet me! Somebody pet me!”

Initial chuckles from fellow shoppers quickly dissolved into discomfort as Miller grew increasingly persistent. He approached multiple patrons, leaning into their personal space and repeating the demand. Most shoppers simply turned away or walked down adjacent aisles, treating the behavior as an eccentric, albeit awkward, bid for attention. However, when one family chose to entirely ignore his disruptions, the situation escalated from an uncomfortable public nuisance into a violent assault.

The Confrontation in the Aisle

According to statements gathered by responding officers, a couple was shopping with their two young children near the canine nutrition section when Miller approached them. Witnesses noted that the family was actively trying to keep their children focused on selecting a treat for their dog, consciously avoiding eye contact with Miller as he drew near.

Frustrated by the lack of response, Miller reportedly blocked their path, staring directly at the parents and repeating, “Pet me.”

The father, attempting to de-escalate the situation while shielding his children, politely asked the man to step aside and leave them alone. Instead of moving, Miller became visibly enraged. According to store surveillance footage later reviewed by investigators, Miller pulled a canister of heavy-duty pepper spray from his jacket pocket. Without warning, he unleashed a thick cloud of the chemical irritant directly into the faces of the parents and toward the stroller where their youngest child sat.

The reaction within the store was immediate. The enclosed aisle trapped the aerosolized spray, causing it to disperse quickly through the immediate area. The family began coughing violently, gasping for air as the chemical scorched their eyes and respiratory tracts. Passersby rushed to pull the screaming children out of the affected zone, while store employees scrambled to call 911 and open the building’s front doors to ventilate the air.

Chaos at the Checkout and the Police Response

As the family collapsed into the hands of helpful bystanders who were trying to flush their eyes with bottled water, Miller reportedly attempted to blend back into the crowd. He calmly walked toward the front checkout lanes, seemingly unbothered by the screams and coughing fit echoing from the back of the store.

However, alert store staff and a few courageous shoppers tracked his movements, ensuring he could not slip out into the parking lot before law enforcement arrived.

Within minutes, multiple police cruisers and an emergency medical team arrived at the scene. Officers entered the store with caution, unsure of the full extent of the threat. They quickly identified Miller based on descriptions provided by frantic store patrons. When confronted near the exit, Miller offered no resistance but appeared entirely unrepentant, muttering incoherently about people being disrespectful and ignoring him.

Paramedics immediately set up a triage area outside the store entrance to treat the affected family. The chemical agent used was identified as a highly concentrated pepper defense spray, which causes immediate, severe burning of the skin and temporary blindness. The mother and father bore the brunt of the blast, while their children suffered secondary exposure from the airborne cloud. All four family members required extensive decontamination on-site, with their eyes being flushed for over forty minutes before they were cleared by medical staff. Fortunately, no permanent injuries were reported, though the psychological trauma, particularly for the children, was immense.

The Arrest and Legal Aftermath

Arthur Miller was taken into custody on the spot. A search of his person revealed the mostly spent canister of pepper spray tucked back into his coat pocket. He was transported to the county jail and booked on multiple counts, including felony assault with a chemical agent, child endangerment, and disorderly conduct.

During his initial booking and subsequent questioning, investigators attempted to understand the motive behind such an erratic and aggressive outburst. According to police transcripts, Miller expressed deep frustration with what he perceived as a “cold and unfeeling society.” He claimed that he went to the pet store specifically because he knew people there would be in a mindset to offer affection and attention. When the family refused to acknowledge his presence or humor his bizarre request, he claimed he felt “grossly insulted” and acted out of a desire to force them to acknowledge him.

Legal experts suggest that Miller’s defense team will likely pursue a mental competency evaluation given the highly unusual nature of the pre-assault behavior. However, prosecutors are moving forward with the assault charges, emphasizing that regardless of any potential psychological distress, the deployment of a weapons-grade irritant against a defenseless family and young children constitutes a severe criminal act.

A Community Left Shocked

The pet store remained closed for the remainder of the evening as professional cleaners worked to scrub the affected aisles and completely clear the air filtration system of any residual capsaicin. For the local community, the bizarre event has left a lingering sense of unease. A place typically reserved for families and pet lovers became the backdrop for a startling reminder of how quickly public spaces can turn dangerous.

Regular shoppers expressed shock that an elderly man could harbor such hidden volatility. Store management later released a brief statement thanking their staff and the quick-acting bystanders who helped the victims, reiterating their commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all customers—human and animal alike. As Miller awaits his upcoming arraignment behind bars, the community is left grappling with the strange reality of a Saturday afternoon shopping trip derailed by a tragic, violent demand for attention.
