Most of the country at this point knows about the Tiger passing game with Jayden Daniels, Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. However, one of the more underrated and key parts of the offense might be tied to the run game. Earlier this week, coach Brian Kelly spoke about LSU transfer running back Logan Diggs and how he’s helped in 2023.
LSU transfer running back Logan Diggs has been vital to the success of the Tigers’ offense
LSU football has one of the best offenses in all of college football. There’s little denying it at this point. They rank No. 3 nationally in total offense (548.3 yards per game) and No. 5 in scoring (44.8 points per game). Still, what exactly makes it so good?
Well, according to head coach Brian Kelly, LSU transfer running back Logan Diggs has been one of the sneaky best parts of the entire offense.
“Logan has just been really physical, really reliable in all areas,” coach Brian Kelly told the media on Monday. “Catching the football, picking up protections, and getting us the tough yardage when we need it.”
So far in 2023, Diggs has totaled 81 carries for 488 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Notably, his yards per carry average is by far the best of his career, and he’s on track to set career bests in all three statistics.
His numbers look even better when you consider he didn’t get a single carry in week one vs. Florida State.
Diggs and 3rd down conversions are the key to success
As good as Diggs has been overall, it’s his short-yardage effectiveness that makes him so good.
“As you know, we’ve kept ourselves in some really good third down situations, extremely manageable third down situations,” Kelly continued. “I think we lead the country in third down conversions: 56 percent. A lot of that is tough yardage running, and Logan’s just been really good at that.”
While the Tigers don’t exactly lead the country in third down conversion percentage, they are the best in the SEC. The Tigers rank No. 3 nationally, converting on 56.3 percent of their attempts.
As coach Brian Kelly stated, Logan Diggs has been a major part of that success. Additionally, if he weren’t so successful in that aspect, the LSU football offense would see far more possessions end early. Instead, the Tigers are one of the best in college football at scoring the ball.
