It’s been a largely successful past few days for the Tiger football program. While several players have elected to head off to the NFL, they’ve also retained some big names. Notably, today, LSU starting safety Major Burns has officially announced that he will return in 2024 for his senior season.

LSU starting safety Major Burns to return in 2024 for senior season

After beginning his college career with Georgia in 2020, recording just five tackles in his freshman season, LSU starting safety Major Burns elected for a change ahead of 2021. In turn, he made his way back west to his hometown of Baton Rouge to play for the Tigers.

While it took some adjusting, it’s safe to say it was a good decision. In his first two years back home with the purple and gold, the 6-foot-2, 193-pound defensive back tallied 62 tackles to go along with five passes defended and an interception. However, this past year, despite the struggles throughout the defense, Burns found his footing in a major way.

He ended up recording 90 tackles through 13 games, including 13 in the bowl game victory over Wisconsin. This bodes well for all parties involved, especially after today’s announcement that the LSU starting safety would return for his senior season in 2024.

There’s no denying the lack of depth the Tiger secondary was faced with throughout the 2023 season. It was particularly noticeable at cornerback, as multiple freshmen were starting by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t exactly a recipe for success, and now, looking ahead to 2024, it can truly only get better. After ranking No. 115 nationally in passing yards allowed (255.6 YPG) and No. 103 in turnovers gained (14), veteran presence and an improved defensive staff will need to be the difference heading into next season.

With the return of Major Burns, LSU is continuing to improve, particularly at defensive back. He’ll look to compete for reps against returning players such as Jordan Allen and Ryan Yaites, as well as new additions like freshman Dashawn McBryde, sophomore Austin Ausberry and senior Jardin Gilbert.
