Analysis

When looking at a batting lineup in baseball, few spots are more important than position number one. Not only is this the spot that will see the most at-bats over the course of the season, but it’s also the spot that sets the tone for the rest of the offense.

That’s why it stuck out so much when head coach Jay Johnson said, “I think he has a mentality, an attitude and a skillset, that maybe last year’s team was lacking,” when describing his transfer portal addition second baseman Daniel Dickinson on Southeastern 16.

It’s one thing to have the skillset, but leading off for your offense requires a certain confidence, and mentality, that so far, it appears Dickinson possesses.

After you get through the number one slot, things start to clear up quite a bit moving into spots two, three and four. First baseman Jared Jones is by far the best pure slugger on roster, which would work well at number two, while Steven Milam and Michael Braswell III make sense at three and four, as those two finished 2024 as some of the most consistent bats on roster.

From there, in the words of coach Johnson on ‘Batter Up’ with Kendall Rogers and Mike Scarborough, “it’s just about quality at-bats” for spots five through nine.

Fortunately, the Tiger head coach has no shortage of players who match that description, so don’t be surprised to see Johnson mix this group up throughout the season.

Still, for the sake of today’s projections, we slotted in outfielder (DH) Josh Pearson, right fielder Jake Brown, catcher Luis Hernandez, center fielder Chris Stanfield and left fielder Derek Curiel, due in large part to the mix of power, consistency, and overall baseball IQ that this group could provide on day one.
